PROVO, Utah — The Hawai'i men's volleyball team had two of the three games it lost to No. 4 BYU at 27-27.

As it happens, the Warriors actually have a drill they use in practice called "27-27."

But familiarity with the situation didn't help. BYU finished stronger in Games 1 and 3 in a 35-33, 30-22, 30-27 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation sweep last night in the Smith Fieldhouse.

"We use that drill, but BYU was just a little better at it than we were," Hawai'i coach Mike Wilton.

As it did Friday night in a four-game loss, Hawai'i (3-11 overall, 3-9 MPSF) started strong and took an early lead in Game 1. The Warrior advantage reached 22-16 on a Dio Dante kill but BYU battled back and tied the game at 27-all after a long rally ended in a Hawai'i hitting error. The Warriors reached 29-28 on a BYU service error and served for the win five times. But each time, BYU scored to stay even. A kill from Steven Grgas gave Hawai'i its final game point at 33-32, but BYU scored the next three points to win 35-33.

BYU easily won Game 2, out-hitting Hawai'i .300 to .028. The Cougars also out-blocked the Warriors 5.0 to 1.0 and out-dug Hawaii 15 to 6.

In Game 3, the Warriors fought back from a 15-12 deficit to tie it at 22-all on a Matt Vanzant kill. Lauri Hakala used BYU's block to score and tie the game at 27-27 but two Hawai'i errors and a triple block from the Cougars ended the match.

"We played better tonight," Wilton said. "We're still getting better but we missed too many serves. We missed 20 percent tonight and that's too much."

Wilton made some lineup changes from Friday's match and praised the play of redshirt freshmen Vanzant (11 kills, five digs) and Grgas (7 kills, two block assists). Hakala led the Warriors with 14 kills and Kyle Klinger added four block assists.

Ivan Perez had 15 kills for BYU (11-4, 7-3), followed by freshman Robby Stowell (13) and Yosleyder Cala (12). Hawaii hit just .134 for the match and was out-blocked 14.0 to 10.0.

Hawai'i will play its next seven matches at home, including an alumni event on March 2 and two matches against top-ranked Pepperdine on March 8 and 10.
