Player agent Leo Goeas, a former University of Hawai'i and pro offensive lineman, is attending the National Football League Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Among his clients are former UH offensive linemen Dane Uperesa and Samson Satele. Here is Goeas' diary entry:
Saturday, Feb. 24: It was a tough day for Dane Uperesa. He strained a hamstring in his first 40-yard-dash attempt. He pretty much couldn't do anything after that. He's going to have to make up for it at next month's Pro Day in Carson, Calif.
He's going to have it checked out back home, but I don't think it's that serious.
If he tested today, with the numbers he was putting up at the training facility in Houston, he would have been among the leaders in some of the categories. He would have had one of the top verticals. Without that, it's hard to tell where he projects. If he did what he's capable of doing, he would have been a solid fourth-round or fifth-round kind of guy. He's disappointed, obviously, but we're trying to encourage him, and get him ready for the Pro Day.
Samson Satele did well. He looked very good in the drills. He timed out at a high 5.1 in the 40. I don't have anything official. Nothing is official yet. It's from what I've been hearing from different scouts.
In the shuttle drills, Sam was near the top of the heat. And he had the highest vertical jump, at 33 inches.
I thought Sam did a good job. I think he would have liked to have timed out a little better in the 40, but in the big picture, that's not the end of the world. He's glad it's all over with.
I think Sam will be the second center to go in the draft. He should go in the second round, hopefully, or early third.
The first center will be Ryan Kalil from USC. Kalil is going to be a late first-round pick. Sam is the next guy. I feel strongly Sam will be a second-rounder.
The bad news is all of the late-afternoon flights were canceled. We got hit by sleet. Sam and Dane were supposed to leave this afternoon, but now they have to stay another night.
