Moloka'i firefighters save home from brushfire

Advertiser Staff

KALUAKO'I, Moloka'i — A fire that was reported shortly before noon today burned an estimated 60 acres and threatened a home in Kaluako'i on the west end of Moloka'i, the Maui Fire Department said.

Firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading on to the residential property, and the home was spared. Two helicopters and nine firefighters were dispatched from Maui to assist 13 Moloka'i firefighters in battling the blaze. County water tankers also were at the fire scene, and bulldozers were used to make fire breaks.

Deputy Fire Chief Neal Bal said he hoped the fire would be contained by tomorrow.
