Police were called at about 4 a.m. by someone who reported hearing a gunshot near Nanawale, and officers later found a body in a burned vehicle near Highway 137 and close to the shoreline in the Wa'a Wa'a area.
Police Capt. Larry Weber said there were witnesses to the shooting, and officers identified the 17-year-old alleged shooter from statements by the witnesses.
Weber said the youth and the slain man reportedly knew each other, but declined to say what the motive for the shooting might have been.
Weber said police do not believe there was any sort of a physical altercation before the shooting.
Officers searched for the teen Sunday, and a family member told police where to find him. The teen was arrested without incident shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday, police said.
Police are not releasing the name of the youth because he is a juvenile. He was charged with second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, second-degree arson and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle, police said.
The condition of the body has made it difficult to confirm the victim's identity, and police are withholding the name of the victim until he can be positively identified. Authorities are trying to identify the remains through dental records and DNA, and an autopsy is planned for tomorrow to determine the exact cause of death.
