Carll captures Hilo Invitational golf

Kevin Carll, Turtle Bay Resort's head professional, shot a 6-under-par 65 yesterday to capture the 10th Hilo Invitational at Hilo Municipal.

Carll had a 36-hole total of 6-under 136 to win by a stroke over 16-year-old amateur Pono Calip and pro Joe Phengsavath.

Calip shot 70—137 and Phengsavath shot 69—137. Pro Jerry Mullen (71—138) placed fourth followed by pro David Gerken (71—139) and pro Jacob Low (67—140). Defending champion Jarett Hamamoto finished in a tie for seventh with 73—141.

KAWATE, NISHIMOTO WIN

Mike Kawate and Roy Nishimoto shot a final-round 63 yesterday to win the HPLGA Four-Ball tournament by one stroke at Ted Makalena Municipal.

Kawate and Nishimoto finished with a 36-hole total of 131. Rodney Doo and Shakil Ahmed, and Aki Matsumura and Casey Watabu tied for second at 132.

Tadd Fujikawa, who teamed with Chan Kim to win last year, tied for sixth with Adrian Doo at 134.

Donn Suzuki and Dennis Onaga won A flight, and Ronald Kakiuchi and Doug Higa won B flight.

HAWAI'I LOSES TWO

Christi Raycroft and Cassie Schafer each scored three goals as No. 10 UC Davis defeated No. 4 Hawai'i, 16-11, yesterday in the seventh-place match of the UC Irvine Invitational at Irvine, Calif.

Kelly Mason and Ryan Hanson-Swaner scored three goals apiece for the Rainbow Wahine (8-7), who open a four-match homestand tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Michigan.

Earlier yesterday, Lisa van Raalte scored two goals in UH's 10-4 loss to No. 9 UC Irvine.


SOFTBALL

HILO SWEEPS CU

Tracy Ryan pitched a five-hitter and Miki Asamura had three hits and three RBIs as Hawai'i-Hilo beat Chaminade, 10-1, yesterday to complete a sweep of a non-conference doubleheader at Central O'ahu Regional Park.

Chelsea Osborne and Leo Sing Chow each added three hits for the Vulcans (14-2).

Jessica Lose had two hits and an RBI for the Silverswords (0-9).

In the first game, Sing Chow pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts in Hilo's 4-2 win.
