Running, catching, meeting people fill Ilaoa's busy day

By Nate Ilaoa
Special to The Advertiser

Former University of Hawai‘i running back Nate Ilaoa competed in seven drills yesterday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He had the fourth-best 60 shuttle time among running backs, finishing in 11.78 seconds. Here’s his diary entry.

Sunday, Feb. 25: It's been kind of weird.

We were the last group today, so we had to wait 1 1/2 hours for the other group to finish running.

We did a lot of standing around. That was the toughest part of it. You want to get out there and perform, but then you have to wait around. But overall, it was pretty good.

We had to do the broad jump. I've done that before, but these guys out here are freaks. They can jump out of the world. I did OK, a lot better than I had in the past. But compared to the others, it was nothing.

My vertical jump was all right. But like I said, it doesn't compare to some of those other guys' verticals.

I did OK in the shuttle. I ran a 4.4. A lot of Hawai'i guys did OK in the shuttle. It was something we worked on in Hawai'i. We sharpened it up at the training center in Houston.

I thought I did really well in the football drills, the football aspect of running and catching. That was what I was looking forward to doing — competing in a football-type scenario. Catching the ball is something we did every day in practice out in Hawai'i. I'm used to running routes and catching passes.

It was nice to get out there. Yesterday, I took the Wonderlic test. I answered about 42 of the 50 questions. Overall, I did OK on it.

I talked to a lot of teams over here. Maybe I talked to all of them. I had a lot of private meetings, too. It's going to be a whirlwind to think back at what went on.

I felt the Jaguars and the Eagles showed a lot of interest, as well as the Bengals. I had private interviews with Green Bay and Washington, teams like that. It's been pretty crazy.

I met coach Jack Del Rio of the Jaguars, coach Bill Belichick of the Patriots, coach Sean Payton of the Saints. You see these guys on SportsCenter all of the time. You finally get a chance to meet them, it's funny. You only usually see the upper-body part of them. But some of these guys are pretty big. Coach Belichick knows what he's doing. He's very professional. All of the coaches are very professional.

I weighed 245, a little lighter than when I was at UH. I'm going to have to go in as a running back. That's what I've been telling them.

The whole combine was an experience. It was real fun because a lot of these guys are great guys. There are a lot of Hawai'i players and Polynesian guys at the combine. We were able to kick back with these guys. There were a lot of guys to talk to, and it was easy to make new friends.

I made some friends, like Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch. A lot of them took my number. They said they might come out to Hawai'i. I was like, "If you come through, hit me up."

The thing is, they all had respect for our team up in Hawai'i, as crazy as that sounds. A lot of these guys were like, "I wish I was out in Hawai'i to score all of those points and get all of those yards."

Lorenzo Booker, from Florida State, came up to me and said, "Man, I wish I took a visit to Hawai'i. I wish I knew you guys could move the ball that well and score all of those points."

Overall, I want to get back to Hawai'i and relax for a little bit. I'm going to be back in Hawai'i until the Pro Day next month.
