Hearing set for Canadian, 83, in wife's stabbing death

Advertiser Staff

An 83-year-old Canadian man accused of stabbing his wife to death at the Ilikai Hotel on Sunday made his first appearance in a Honolulu courtroom this morning.

State Deputy Public Defender Alen Kaneshiro waived a reading of the charges against Ted Jandura, who was charged yesterday with second-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Ingeborg Jandura.

Ted Jandura wore a white paper jumpsuit and slippers and was shackled at the ankles during his 90-second court appearance.

He spoke to District Judge Leslie Hayashi briefly to say he was having trouble hearing what was being said in the court proceeding.

The audio level was turned up several notches in the courtroom as Hayashi explained to Jandura that a preliminary hearing was scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Thursday to determine if there is enough evidence for the case against him to go forward. The judge advised Jandura not to talk to anyone about his case except his attorney. She confirmed his bail at $1 million.

Jandura was arrested Sunday after police responded to a call about an argument at the Ilikai Tower. Once they arrived there, they reported finding the body of Ingeborg Jandura covered with dried blood lying on a bed inside one of the units.
