Kunia plantation closure hits Del Monte's bottom line

Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc., the Coral Gables, Fla.-based company that abruptly ended its Kunia pineapple operations in November and laid off 551 workers, said its fourth-quarter net loss widened compared to a year earlier as it took $3.7 million of charges to accelerate closing of the Hawai'i operations and restructure a juice facility in Italy.The company said its loss of $59.9 million compared with a loss of $3.5 million a year earlier. Sales in the three-month period ending Dec. 31 fell to $737.6 million from $757.9 million.
