Lei Day queen, court contest set for Saturday

Lei Day is not till May 1, but residents are invited to attend the lei queen and court selection competition, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at McCoy Pavilion, Ala Moana Park.

This year's event marks the 80th anniversary of the Lei Day or May Day celebration. Queens are selected from rotating age groups; this year's it's 31-54.

Competitors are Sheila Lehuanani Kaho'okele, Paulette Mililani Nakamatsu, Carlene Uakealehua Agbayani, Daveanne Manu Anana-Okamura, Kalei'hihi Ka'ohikula Fermantez, Kelly Patricia Ka'imilani Sheather and Carmen Keanianuenue Rodrigues.

The free program begins at 9 a.m., lei-making competition at 9:30 a.m., with competition from 10:45 a.m. A hula competition begins at 1 p.m., with the lei queen and princesses named at 2 p.m.
