$28K grant for Makaha nonprofit helps family project

Hoa 'Aina O Makaha has received a $28,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to implement Phase 3 of the ongoing project, Ke Ola Kino Maika'i – Healthy Food, Healthy Life in the Wai'anae Coastal Community.

OHA announced the grant this morning.

Ke Ola Kino Maika'i encourages families to learn how to cultivate, harvest and prepare their own healthy foods, among other things.

Phase 3 of the project includes four new components. These are

  • Coordinating and hosting monthly family days and family nights.

  • Providing taro and other farm products in children's diets one day each week at Makaha Elementary School.

  • Providing food for the homeless.

  • Producing food to sell in the local area community.
