Kukui Plaza residents to protest prostitution today

Advertiser Staff

Kukui Plaza residents and others will hold signs at the intersection of Nu'uanu Avenue and Kukui Street this afternoon to protest prostitution activities in their community.

The demonstration was organized by the Kukui Plaza apartment owners' association. It will start at 4 p.m.

Residents say prostitution in their community has gotten out of control. They are backing a bill, moving through the state House, that would toughen penalties for prostitution.

State Rep. Karl Rhoads, who represents the district and lives at Kukui Plaza, said the bill would make prostitution a Class C felony after a third conviction. Currently, it is a petty misdemeanor, regardless of prior convictions.
