Apparent drowning victim pulled ashore on Big Island

An 80-year-old man apparently drowned today while snorkeling off the Pani'au coastline, Big Island firefighters said.

The man was spotted in the water about 11:10 a.m., and fellow swimmers pulled him to shore and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Firefighters were called to the scene about 11:41 a.m., and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police are investigating the incident and have not yet released the victim's name.
