Firefighters contain one fire, respond to another

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters contained a 40-acre brushfire this afternoon near Ma'ili Elementary School on Kula'apuni Street.

Meanwhile, they were called at 3:37 p.m. to a brushfire near Makaha Elementary School — the third fire there in as many days.

Both of today's fires are believed to be fireworks-related.

The fire near Makaha Elementary was within a quarter-mile of homes when firefighters arrived, said Capt. Terry Seelig.

In the fire near Ma'ili Elementary, no homes were threatened and no injuries were reported, Seelig said.

About 10 fire companies and Air 1 fought the blaze near Ma'ili Elementary that began about 1 p.m., Seelig said.

"There's a lot of fuel (brush) out there," Seelig said. "There are dry conditions ripe for brushfire even though it's wintertime."
