Hawai'i surfers advance

Eight of the nine Hawai'i surfers in the junior men's division of the Billabong World Junior Championships are still in contention after two rounds of competition.

The second day of the contest was completed yesterday in 1- to 3- foot waves at North Narrabeen, Australia.

Hawai'i surfers T.J. Barron, Hank Gaskell, Torrey Meister, Mason Ho and Granger Larsen won their respective first-round heats, and advanced directly to the third round.

In the second round, Hawai'i surfers Gavin Gillette, Dusty Payne and Casey Brown advanced. Brown, who is from the Big Island, was one of yesterday's standouts, receiving a two-wave score of 14.67 (out of 20).

Maui's Ola Eleogram was the only Hawai'i surfer eliminated in the second round.

In the junior women's division, Coco Ho from Sunset Beach and Leila Hurst from Kaua'i won their first-round heats to advance to the third round.

The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 21 and younger.

WHITING IS PACWEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Chaminade's Zack Whiting has been named Pacific West Conference Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Whiting averaged 35 points, 12.5 assists, 10.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals in victories over Indianapolis and SUNY New Paltz.

Whiting is a senior guard from Chico, Calif.
