Advertiser Staff

Two baseball players from Hawai'i were named to the West Coast Conference/Rawlings 40th anniversary Baseball Team, a collection that includes a knuckleball specialist in the Major Leagues and a Cy Young winner.

Kamehameha alum Dane Sardinha and 'Iolani graduate Mike Fetters were named to the team for their success playing at Pepperdine.

Sardinha, a catcher, was the WCC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American in 2000. He had a .330 career batting average with 45 home runs, 173 RBIs, 54 doubles and a .599 slugging percentage. His 45 homeruns ranks him first at Pepperdine and third in the WCC for all-time home runs. Sardinha was drafted in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2000.

Fetters, a pitcher, was named an All-American and All-District VIII in 1986. He was an all-WCC first team member and the WCC Pitcher of the Year that same year. He ranks second at Pepperdine in fifth in the WCC for career wins with 33. He was 33-13, with a 3.64 earned run average, with 19 complete games and 292 strikeouts. He was drafted in the first round by the California Angels in 1986.

Other players named to the team are Mike Scott and Randy Wolf of Pepperdine, and Tom Candiotti and Von Hayes of Saint Mary's.

Scott won the NL Cy Young Award in 1986. Candiotti, a knuckleballer, pitched 16 years in the major leagues. Hayes and Wolf were all-star players.
