U.S. Adm. William J. Fallon, head of U.S. Pacific Command, will be taking over as the top commander of U.S. forces in the Middle East following the retirement of Gen. John Abizaid, U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye confirmed today.

Inouye was speaking at the sixth annual Hawaii Military Partnership Conference luncheon in downtown Honolulu.

"I hate to see it happen (losing Fallon as head of U.S. Pacific Command)," Inouye said.

"I think it demonstrates Admiral Fallon is a person they need out there."

Fallon assumed command of U.S. Pacific forces in a ceremony on Feb. 26, 2005, taking over from Adm. Thomas B. Fargo. Previously, Fallon served as the commander, U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Command.

Abizaid assumed duties as the commander for U.S. Central Command on July 7, 2003.

U.S. Central Command is responsible for U.S. military action in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for U.S. security interests in 27 nations that stretch from the Horn of Africa through the Arabian Gulf region, into Central Asia.
