Dean Wilson opens Mercedes-Benz with 7-over 80

Advertiser Staff

Kane'ohe's Dean Wilson got off to a rough start to the PGA season, shooting an 7-over-par 80 in windy conditions Thursday in the first round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua, Maui.

Vijay Singh, K.J. Choi and Will MacKenzie were the clubhouse leaders at 4-under 69 in the tournament for 2006 tour event winners at Kapalua Plantation Course.

Wilson, who had two double-bogeys, was in 33rd place with more than half of the 34-man field still on the course. His only birdies came on the fifth and 18th holes, both par-5s.

Tiger Woods, the 2006 Player of the Year, is skipping the tournament to spend time with his family.
