Cost-U-Less sales growth suffered due to Kaua'i Costco

Advertiser Staff

Cost-U-Less Inc., a Bellevue, Washington company that has two of its 11 membership warehouse club stores in Hawai'i, said Costco Wholesale's opening of a store on Kaua'i affected its sales growth during December.

The company reported sales at stores open at least 13 months rose 4 percent compared with a 5.2 percent increase recorded in December 2005.

"The predictable fall off in sales in Kauai due to new competition, and other pressures such as the coup in Fiji, pulled our overall comp sales down," said J. Jeffrey Meder, Cost-U-Less president and chief executive officer. "However, we were still able to show positive comps for the month, a testament to the great seasonal sales in our other markets."
