MTV show based on Maui debuts Jan. 17

"Maui Fever," an MTV series exploring the day-to-day conflicts and camaraderie of seven locals living in Ka'anapali, will premiere at 5 and 10:30 p.m. Jan. 17. The show will air new episodes on Wednesdays at the same times.

With Maui as the backdrop, seven companions navigate life on the island, trying to stabilize relationships amid waves of temptations.

The players include Cheyne, a pro surfer and party guy; Corbin, a dude with no goals or girlfriend; Chaunte, a hottie who loves to be the center of attention and keeps her boyfriend Anthony in the palm of her hand; Anna, a restaurant hostess who is Chaunte's partner in crime and Cheyne's ex; quiet, shy Anthony, who is hanging on tight to his relationship with Chaunte; Sean, a self-admitted "player" who works as a waiter but scrutinizes the tourist flow to encounter his love du jour; and Jesse, the new guy in town and acknowledged "outsider" who moves in with Corbin to be part of the in crowd.

"While the guys think they have the upper hand in relationships with the locals and tourists, it's the girls who seem to be really pulling the strings," said executive producer Tony DiSanto of the youth-targeted soap opera. "The lush location, compelling characters and classic beach movie vibe come together to make 'Maui Fever' a totally unique and compelling viewing experience."
