Sabers clinch OIA West top seed

WAIP'IO — Brittney Garcia went 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs last night to help Campbell hold off Mililani, 7-6, and clinch the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division's No. 1 seed for the upcoming playoffs.

The Sabers (10-0) pounded out 14 hits, and jumped to leads of 5-1 and 7-2 before withstanding a late rally by the Trojans (8-2).

Kristi Oshiro's bases-clearing double closed it to 7-5, then Mililani scored another run in the seventh and had the tying run on first with one out. But Campbell reliever Bre Patton got a force out at second and a fly out to center field to end the game.

"It feels good, because we put in a lot of hard work at practice," said Garcia, who plays left field and bats seventh. "There's a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and when someone's down, we pick each other up. We just work hard and have faith."

Garcia needed a pick-me-up recently herself, after a slump dropped her from fifth to seventh in the lineup. But she flourished in that spot last night, driving in two runs with a third-inning double to center to put Campbell up, 5-1.

She then added another RBI double in the fifth to make it 6-2.

"I had her up in the 5 spot (before), but she was struggling," Sabers coach David Perreira said. "But she did a great job today. We knew she was capable of it, because she works hard."

Garcia said her slump was traced to poor mechanics.

"I was dipping my bat too low," she said. "I needed to make a change, and the coaches taught me a lot."

Mililani coach Rose Antonio was impressed with Campbell's hitting overall.

"It was this kind of game last time, too (a 6-5 first-round loss)," Antonio said. "They hit the ball and prepared well."
