ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Fever dream of Diane Arbus

Advertiser Staff

Never released in a major local theater, "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus," opens the Artists and Film series at Doris Duke Theatre on Tuesday (screens at 1, 4 and 7:30 p.m.). Don't expect a first-camera-to-suicide biopic of the seminal '60s photographer — director Steve Shainberg has created his own surreal (and gorgeously filmed) interpretation of the artist's life (the fact that Nicole Kidman, left, plays the earthy Arbus is already extreme fantasy). Robert Downey Jr. as her imagined mentor, a former sideshow freak, is stellar. Series continues through Jan. 18. 532-8700, www.honoluluacademy.org.

MMMPOP CULTURE

TOKIDOKI DESIGNER IN TOWN

Tokidoki goods — ironic, ridiculously cute plastic figurines of characters such as the cacti critters at left — look Japanese, but designer Simone Legno is Italian. Based in Los Angeles, he has teamed up with Le Sportsac (à la the 2003 match up between artist Takashi Murakami and Louis Vuitton) to design a line of bags emblazoned with Tokidoki creations. Legno will be at Le Sportsac Ala Moana from 1 to 4 p.m. tomorrow to sign autographs. For details: 973-6306.
