Ho, Hurst advance in surf at Australia

Coco Ho of Sunset Beach and Leila Hurst of Kaua'i advanced to the quarterfinals of the junior women's division of the Billabong World Junior Championships yesterday.
The third day of the contest was completed in 1- to 3-foot waves at North Narrabeen, Australia.
Ho was the high scorer of the day in the junior women's division, recording a two-wave total of 15.5 in her third-round victory over California's Sage Ericson. Hurst defeated California's Erica Hosseini, 11.67 to 8.03, in the third round.
Ho and Hurst were the only Hawai'i surfers in the junior women's field. They will face each other in the quarterfinals.
In the junior men's division, 10 out of 16 heats in the third round were completed yesterday.
Maui surfers Hank Gaskell and Dusty Payne won their third-round heats. Gaskell was the high scorer among the junior men yesterday, receiving a two-wave total of 15.66.
Another Maui surfer, Granger Larsen, was eliminated.
Five other Hawai'i surfers in the junior men's field have yet to complete their third-round heats in a contest that is considered the world championship for surfers age 21 and younger.

UH FUNDRAISER JAN. 15
The University of Hawai'i baseball program will hold its annual Grand Slam Celebration Jan. 15 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The event serves as the Rainbows' fundraiser. Cost is $75 for individual tickets and $850 for a corporate-sponsored table. Portions of the expenses are tax-deductible. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Highlights include the food and beverages and live and silent auctions. Music will be provided by Imua.

TWO FROM ISLES HONORED
Kamehameha alum Dane Sardinha and 'Iolani graduate Mike Fetters have been named to the West Coast Conference/Rawlings 40th anniversary Baseball Team for their success playing at Pepperdine.
Sardinha, a catcher, was the WCC Player of the Year and a first-team All-American in 2000. He had a .330 career batting average with 45 home runs, 173 RBIs, 54 doubles and a .599 slugging percentage. His 45 homers rank him first at Pepperdine and third in the WCC career list. Sardinha was drafted in the second round by the Cincinnati Reds in 2000.
Fetters, a pitcher, was named an All-American and All-District VIII in 1986. He was an all-WCC first-team member and the WCC Pitcher of the Year that same year. He ranks second at Pepperdine and in fifth in the WCC for career wins with 33. He was 33-13, with a 3.64 earned run average, with 19 complete games and 292 strikeouts. He was drafted in the first round by the California Angels in 1986.
TENNIS
SU, PORTER PREVAIL
Wei Yu Su and Dillon Porter, the reigning Kailua Men's Night Doubles champions, beat former French Open doubles champion Luke Jensen and 'Aiea's Dennis Lajola, 7-5, 6-7, 8-6 (10-7, super tiebreaker), Wednesday night in an exhibition match at the University of Hawai'i Tennis Complex.
Su is a former Brigham Young-Hawai'i All-American, Porter is the Seasiders' No. 1 player, Jensen is an ESPN tennis analyst and Syracuse women's coach, and the 17-year-old Lajola is one of the top juniors in the U.S.
