Flooding closes Kamehameha Highway in Hau'ula

Advertiser Staff

Kamehameha Highway near Pokiwai Place in Hau'ula was closed to traffic in both directions at about 9:30 tonight due to flooding caused by a culvert blocked by sand, according to O'ahu Civil Defense spokesman John Cummings.

State Department of Transportation and O'ahu Civil Defense officials are on the scene monitoring the situation.

There had been fears tonight that residents might have to evacuate some parts of Hau'ula or Punalu'u because of heavy rain. But at 9:30 p.m., Civil Defense officials and the Weather Service said the storm appeared to have moved offshore.

There have been no evacuations or reports of major damage or injuries.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for the entire state.
