SANTA CLARA, Calif. Special-teams coordinator Larry Mac Duff is leaving the San Francisco 49ers to become an assistant coach at the University of Texas.Mac Duff, a former University of Hawai'i assistant coach, will be the Longhorns' assistant head coach, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, the 49ers said tonight.
McDuff will share co-defensive coordinator duties with Duane Akina, another former UH assistant under Dick Tomey.
"Larry has laid a solid foundation and blueprint for the next special-teams coach to follow," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. "I know it was a difficult decision for Larry, but this was a great opportunity for him."
Nolan now must replace two of his three coordinators after firing defensive coordinator Billy Davis on Wednesday. In addition, assistant head coach Mike Singletary is a candidate for several top coaching jobs in the league.
Mac Duff, the New York Giants' special-teams coach from 1997-2000, spent the last four seasons with San Francisco under coaches Dennis Erickson and Nolan, his former colleague when both were assistants at Stanford.
Mac Duff and Akina worked together in Hawai'i in 1984 and 1985 and with Tomey at the University of Arizona from 1987 to 1996.
