Chaminade topples Hawai'i-Hilo, 88-85

Zack Whiting amassed 23 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds as host Chaminade rallied past Hawai'i-Hilo, 88-85, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at McCabe Gym.

Marko Kolaric added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Silverswords (9-5, 1-1 PacWest), who overcame a 41-34 halftime deficit.

Travis Sobers hit 6 of 10 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, and Sam Wilhoite added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Vulcans (4-10, 1-1).

Hilo held a nine-point edge in the second half when the Silverswords used a 12-0 run to seize control.

Hilo stayed close and Sobers' 3-pointer put the Vulcans ahead 85-84.

Whiting scored on a layup to put Chaminade up 86-85, and Hilo turned the ball over while setting up a final shot. CU's Mike Green then hit two free throws to make it 88-85, and Rashad Bilal's desperation 3-pointer bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.

BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 79, GRAND CANYON 73

Lucas Alves had 27 points and nine rebounds, Corey Nielson added 18 points and Wu Tai-hao 12 as the host Seasiders (11-4, 3-0 PacWest) turned back the Antelopes (6-5, 2-1) in a battle of unbeaten conference teams. Rudy Bogan led Grand Canyon with 24 points.

HAWAI'I PACIFIC 71, NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 60

Brandon Lee scored 21 points and Adam Reinking added 13 points and 11 rebounds, leading the host Sea Warriors (7-7, 1-2 PacWest) past the Argos (5-7, 0-3). Chris Clock led the Argos with 23 points.

PACWEST WOMEN

CHAMINADE 71, HILO 64

Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 20 points and 15 rebounds as the host Silverswords (2-8, 1-1 PacWest) beat the Vulcans (2-7, 1-1). Katherine Carlisle added 20 points and Samantha Saito 12, including two clutch free throws in the closing seconds, for Chaminade. Sheila Azevedo had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Krystlelyn Omlan scored 11 points for Hilo, which lost starting guard Amy Kaaiakamanu to an injury early in the first half.

GRAND CANYON 91, BRIGHAM YOUNG-HAWAI'I 74

Ashley Rohr and Rosalyn Nelson each scored 15 points as the Antelopes (9-4, 3-0 PacWest) beat the host Seasiders (3-10, 1-2). Latoya Wily had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Kayla Burningham added 21 points and nine assists for BYUH.

NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR 51, HAWAI'I PACIFIC 49

Ashley Wilson stole an inbounds pass and scored on a layup as time expired, lifting the Argos (2-12, 2-1 PacWest) over the Sea Warriors (0-14, 0-3). Grace Hartman scored 15 for Notre Dame; Constance DeCaires tallied 12 for HPU.
