Ho ties for third in World Juniors

Advertiser Staff

Mason Ho of Sunset Beach tied for third place in the junior men's division of the Billabong World Junior Championships yesterday.

The final day of the prestigious contest was completed in 2- to 4-foot waves at North Narrabeen, Australia.

Ho was eliminated in the semifinals by South Africa's Jordy Smith. Ho, 18, is the son of famous Hawai'i surfer Michael Ho.

Coco Ho, Mason's younger sister, also tied for third place in the junior women's division on Friday.

"I'm just super-stoked with the result," Mason Ho said. "I tied with my sister, who got third in the girls, so she can't brag too much when we get home."

Smith went on to defeat Brazil's Adriano de Souza in the final to win his first world junior championship.

The contest is considered the world championship for surfers age 21 and younger.

Hank Gaskell of Maui and Torrey Meister of O'ahu's North Shore were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Hawai'i placed third in the final team standings. South Africa was first, and Australia was second.
