BYU suspends ex-Mililani hoop star Broadus for season

PROVO, Utah — BYU basketball player Rashaun Broadus was suspended for the season Monday after being arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.Broadus, who played at Mililani High School, was stopped by police early Sunday just hours after scoring 19 points to lead the Cougars over San Diego State in his best game of the season.
"The whole thing is very unfortunate. He will not be playing or practicing with the team," coach Dave Rose said.
Officers reported a "strong smell of alcohol" when Broadus was pulled over while driving south on Interstate 15 about 5 a.m. Sunday, Trooper Preston Raban of the Utah Highway Patrol said.
He was taken to the Utah County Jail and booked for speeding, not having a driver's license, improperly tinted windows and suspicion of drunken driving, Raban said.
Broadus failed sobriety tests and refused a breath test, the trooper said. He was released about two hours later.
Broadus, a senior in his second year at BYU, transferred from Western Nebraska Community College. He was a starting guard in 11 of BYU's 15 games, averaging 6.1 points.
BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins said the case has been referred to the school's honor code office. Alcohol use by students is prohibited at BYU, which is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Broadus' phone number is not listed. He did not immediately respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press.
"Our basketball program ... has expectations of behavior and high standards that we've set for ourselves," Rose said. "Unfortunately, Rashaun Broadus made some decisions not in keeping with these standards."
