Advertiser Staff

Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated next Monday with several events this weekend including a parade and unity rally in Waikiki.

The events also include a Royal Hawaiian Band concert 11:30 a.m. Friday at 'Iolani Palace in honor of both King and Lili'uokalani, Hawai'i's last queen, who was overthrown on Jan. 17.

"Lift Every Voice," a musical celebration, takes place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Mission Memorial Auditorium at the Honolulu Hale Civic Grounds.

That event will be followed by a candelight bell-ringing ceremony of the Nagasaki Peace Bell at 5:30 p.m., also on the Honolulu Hale campus. A torch light march to 'Iolani Palace will follow the ceremony.

The parade begins 9 a.m. Monday traveling from Ala Moana Park's Magic Island to Kapi'olani Park. The unity rally, which will include entertainment and vending booths, is slated for Kapi'olani Park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All these events are free. Go to www.mlk-hawaii.com for information. The Sunday and Monday activities are sponsored by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coalition – Hawai'i.

Additionally, "The Legacy of Peace-builders in the Asia Pacific: King, Queen, and a 'Servant,'" a panel discussion exploring the lives of King, Lili'uokalani and Mahatma Gandhi sponsored by the East-West Center, is scheduled for 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Wailana Room, Garden Level, of the Imin Center, Jefferson Hall.

Cost for the event, including pupus, is $12.

Deadline to register is Wednesday. Call 944-7771 or go to http://www.eastwestcenter.org/events for more details.

There is also a exhibit of nonviolent art, "Keep Your Eyes on the Prize," at the Pacific Traditions Gallery at 19 North Pauahi Street running through Jan. 26.
