73-year-old is O'ahu's first traffic fatality

Advertiser Staff

A 73-year-old woman died last night of injuries she suffered when she was hit by a Dodge Grand Caravan – believed to be taxi cab – while sitting at a bench at a Kalakaua Avenue bus shelter.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle was traveling in the south-bound right lane when he apparently lost consciousness and swerved onto the sidewalk, hitting the bus shelter at about 4:30 p.m.

The woman was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center.

The driver, a 52-year-old Honolulu man, was reported in good condition at Queen's with unspecified injuries. A male passenger, 45, of Australia, was uninjured.

The makai-bound lanes of Kalakaua between Makaloa and Kanunu streets were shut down for a time while police investigated.

Speed was not a factor, police said, although it has not yet been determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

The traffic fatality was the first of the year on O'ahu.
