Advertiser Staff

Musician Jack Johnson turned in a brief live performance celebrating the release of island contemporary and traditional vocal group Kaukahi's new CD "Life in These Islands" last night at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach hotel.

Kaukahi also performed at the invitiation-only CD release party, along with Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, and Na Leo's Lehua Kalima Heine and Nalani Choy.

Johnson's 20-minute set with Kaukahi included his own "Banana Pancakes," "Constellations" and "Mud Football."

Kaukahi's 12-song "Life in These Islands" CD was recently released by Honolulu-based label OneHawaii Music. On it, Johnson contributes vocals to a Kaukahi cover of "Constellations," a track from his multimillion-selling 2005 disc "In Between Dreams."

"Life in These Islands" also features guest vocals by Gilliom on "Lei Ho'okahi" and an original composition by Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewitt, "He Waiwai Nui."

Kaukahi vocalist/guitarist Kawika Kahiapo turned in a slack-key guest spot on Johnson's "Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies for the film Curious George" soundtrack, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard magazine's Top 200 album chart in February. And Johnson invited Kaukahi to perform at his Kokua Festival's second outing in April 2005.

Kaukahi's members are Kahiapo, vocalist/upright bassist Barrett Awai, vocalist/guitarist Dean Wilhelm and vocalist/'ukulele player Walt Keale.
