Farrington girls soccer wins first

By Leila Wai
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Farrington girls soccer team won its first game in program history Friday — although the win was almost overshadowed by a school dance later that night.

The Govs scored on an own goal by Kaimuki to win, 1-0. A Kaimuki defender passed the ball back to her goalkeeper but the ball went into the goal instead. It happened so unexpectedly, Farrington coach Sara Wakabayashi said she looked over at assistant coach and sister Lea Nakayama and asked, "Was that a goal?"

"It was good. It was a weird win but we'll take it," Wakabayashi said.

The players "were excited, but anxious to go because they had a dance to go to," said Wakabayashi, who added the players did understand how big the win was for the program.

The Govs are 1-5-3 this season. The girls soccer team was launched in the 2001-02 school year.
