Winter weather advisory issued for Big Island summits

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island. The advisory will remain in effect until at least 6 a.m. today.

A low-pressure system to the west of the state has brought light snow to the summits, with one to two inches of snow already on the ground, forecasters said.

Only light snowfall s expected through the remainder of the night, but temperatures were expected to drop below freezing, resulting in icy road conditions.

As a result, roads to the two summits are closed to the public.

A winter weather advisory means that wintry weather will cause travel difficulties. Observatory personnel should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility in some areas, the weather service said.
