Snow, icy roads close roads to Big Island summits
Advertiser Staff
Icy roads and light snow on Big Island summits have prompted the National Weather Service to extend its winter weather advisory for the Big Island's highest peaks until 4 this afternoon. The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are both affected. A Kona low brought up to 2 inches of snow to the summits, forecasters said.
Roads to the two summits are now closed to the public.
A winter weather advisory means that wintry weather will cause travel difficulties. Observatory personnel should be prepared for slippery roads and limited visibility in some areas, the weather service said.
