Waikiki added to emergency water conservation list

The Honolulu Board of Water Supply is extending its emergency water conservation request to Waikiki this afternoon because repairs to a broken main on Kapahulu Avenue are taking longer than expected, said spokesman Devon Nekoba.

East Honolulu residents from Kapahulu to Hawai'i Kai are asked to continue conserving water while repairs are made, he said. Repairs should be finished sometime this evening.

The 24-inch main that broke at 2:30 p.m. yesterday was encased in concrete and workers had to dig beneath it before they could splice in a new one, Nekoba said.

But workers responding to the break also discovered that a shut-off valve connected to the main had broken. The valve is on Kapahulu near Castle Street and Kanaina Avenue and repairs there forced workers to limit traffic to one lane in either direction, Nekoba said.
