Advertiser Staff

Kaua'i Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste has appointed Kylan Dela Cruz deputy county engineer.

Dela Cruz will assume his position on Jan. 16. He replaces Ladye Martin who left the county in September to help run her family's business.

Dela Cruz recently retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of active duty and four years with the Hawai'i National Guard.

During his Army career, Dela Cruz handled a wide variety of tasks including — management of over 160 people as the non-commissioned officer in charge of operations in the joint POW/MIA accounting command at Hickam Air Force Base, planning and directing the construction of a communication training laboratory and research and development facility, and recruiting, organizing, training and supervising host nation personnel in a number of countries.

Dela Cruz holds a bachelor's of arts degree in Human Resource Development from Hawaii Pacific University and a bachelor's degree in Liberal Studies from Thomas Edison State College in New Jersey. He is a 1983 graduate of Waimea High School.

Dela Cruz grew up in Kaumakani. He moved back to Kaua'i in December.

As the No. 2 person in the Department of Public Works, Dela Cruz will assist county engineer Donald Fujimoto with running the county's largest department.
