HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER
Kamehameha, 'Iolani girls tie

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

'Iolani survived six scoring opportunities by Kamehameha in the final five minutes last night to preserve a 1-1 tie in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls soccer showdown at the Warriors' Kunuiakea Stadium.

Kamehameha (3-0-1) maintained its first-place position in the ILH standings with 10 championship points. Punahou, which defeated Pac-Five yesterday, 1-0, is now in second place (3-0, nine points) and 'Iolani (2-0-1) drops to third place (seven points).

But that could change as soon as tomorrow, since 'Iolani plays at Punahou at 4:15 p.m.

"I told the girls right now a tie is good," said Raiders first-year coach Chris Nied. "It's not a bad result for us, especially at (the Warriors') campus."

And especially considering the game's final five minutes of fury.

Kellee Murayama had given 'Iolani a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute after Jesi Sasaki led her with a nice center pass on three-person break. As Kamehameha keeper Kanani Taaca came out to challenge near the top of the penalty box, Murayama sent a low roller past her and into the right side of the net.

The Warriors answered five minutes later when Mari Punzal knocked in a header from point-blank range on a perfectly placed corner kick by Meleana Shim.

Kamehameha, which had only three shots on goal in the first half, would get more opportunities 20 minutes later.

Sanoe Souza broke free and had a one-on-one with Raiders keeper Nicole Chun about 8 yards from the goal, but Chun made a sliding save. That resulted in a corner kick, and Shim again lofted a ball in front of the net, but the Warriors could not convert.

Kamehameha got a third corner kick and Shim once again sent a nice pass to the back post, but the header attempt sailed over the crossbar.

"We definitely had some pressure on us toward the end, and Kamehameha did a nice job forcing the issue," Nied said. "We were giving balls away, and that would lead to the counter-attack. But Nicole (six saves) did a nice job."

The Warriors had three more scoring opportunties in the final two minutes — another corner kick and two direct kicks from about 35 yards out, but Chun made one save and the other two attempts did not threaten the goal.

"It was a hard-fought game," said Kamehameha assistant Scott Keopuhiwa, one of three deputies filling in for head coach Michele Nagamine, who is away on Mainland business this week. "'Iolani's ball-control and speed is excellent, and they had a number of opportunities in the first half. We had our chances in the second half, but we couldn't put it in."

The Warriors play at Punahou on Saturday.
