Ship trash out of state? Committee keeps the door open

Advertiser Staff

The City Council's Public Works and Energy Committee today approved a resolution that would require the city to consider proposals to ship municipal waste out of state.

City Councilman Todd Apo, who represents the Leeward Coast community that hosts the island's only municipal landfill, said he thinks it's important that the city administration keep the option of shipping waste as an alternative.

City Director of Environmental Services Director Eric Takamura said it's premature to require the city to consider the out-of-state option while there are legal questions about the practice arising on the Mainland and before the city has completed a larger plan to deal with waste in the coming decades.
