Sony Open: Wilson shoots 72 despite triple bogey

Advertiser Staff

Dean Wilson, 37, a Castle High alum from Kaneohe, rallied from a triple bogey to shoot a 2-over 72 in the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club.

Wilson saw a steady round — he was even par through 13 holes — take a disastrous turn when he recorded a triple-bogey 7 on the 467-yard, par-4 No. 5 hole.

But he birdied his final hole — the 506-yard, par-5 ninth to finish 35-37.

Wilson started on the back nine and recorded a bogey and a birdie. He was even through 13 holes after sitting among the top 30 golfers before his triple bogey.

Earlier, Wilson bogeyed his fourth hole — hole No. 13, a 471-yard par-4 and birdied his ninth hole — the par-5, 551-yard 18th hole.

The 144-player field will be cut to the top 70 players and ties after Friday's second round.

Wilson is trying to make his third Sony cut in six tries.

Wilson broke through with his first PGA victory last year and finished 22nd on the PGA Tour money list.
