Sony Open: Diminutive Fujikawa shoots 1-over 71

Advertiser Staff

Moanalua High School sophomore Tadd Fujikawa, the lone amateur in the 144-player field, shot a 1-over-par 71 today in the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club.

The 5-foot-1 Fujikawa, who turned 16 on Monday, recorded one birdie and two bogeys.

He started on the back nine and opened with five consecutive pars.

He bogeyed his next two holes — the 398-yard, par-4 No. 15, and the 417-yard, par-4 16th — before closing with pars to make th e turn at 2-over 37.

After three consecutive pars on the the front nine, Fujikawa got his first birdie — on the 204-yard, par-3 No. 4 hole — to go 1-over.

He then parred his final five holes to close at 1-under 34 on his back nine.

Despite shooting the best of all the Hawaii golfers — pros Dean Wilson and Parker McLachlin are at 2-over — Fujikawa is hovering right around the cutline.

The field will be cut to the top 70 players and ties after Friday's second round.

Fujikawa tees off at 1:30 p.m. on the first tee on Friday.
