'Brown Bags' returns

Advertiser Staff

"Brown Bags to Stardom," a high-school talent contest, returns this Sunday as an interactive TV competition when it makes its debut at 7 p.m. on Oceanic Cable 16 for an eight-week run through March 11.

The show, targeting a youth and family audience, encompasses voting by remote control and by Mobi PCS phones. Mobi is a sponsor of the contest.

Five performance videos, prepared by contestants, will be shown each week, with the two top weekly winners moving to a semi-final round.

"Brown Bags," which originated as a radio station-sponsored live show, now is part of a community outreach program involving the sponsoring Music Foundation of Hawai'i, which supports music education in schools. Thus, students from Mid-Pacific Institute are producing the series, with MPI senior Aaron Katagiri as editor. Show hosts are Jo Takewara and Hannah Thomas, Kamehameha seniors.

The premiere episode features contestants from 'Aiea, Farrington, Kamehameha, Maui and Wai'anae, with former winner Glenn Medeiros also appearing.

A "Brown Bags" concert is set for 7 p.m. March 24 at the Blaisdell Arena, featuring the top vote-getters. The winner will receive $2,000.
