Sony Open: 3 other Hawaii golfers finish well back

Advertiser Staff

Hawaii golfers, Kevin Hayashi, David Chin and Abe Mariano, all shot over par in the first round of the Sony Open in Hawaii at Waialae Country Club.

Hayashi shot 36-38—74, 4-over.

Chin shot 39-37—76, 6-over.

Mariano shot 40-43—83, 13-over.

Hayashi, 44, is playing in his seventh Sony Open but has yet to make the cut.

He qualified by earning his fourth Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year honor since 2001.

Hayashi finished with four birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey. At one point, he was playing the best of all the Hawaii golfers.

After going 3-over through seven holes, Hayashi had successive birdies — on the 454-yard, par-4 eighth and the 506-yard, par-5 ninth — to pull to 1-over 36 after nine.

He then went over par in four of his next six holes to go 6-over.

But he birdied two of his final three holes to close at 3-over 38 on the back.

Chin, 50, a pro at Navy-Marine for 28 years, is making his debut in the Sony. He recorded two birdies and eight bogeys.

Mariano, 47, is a pro at Pure Golf Academy and Fitting Center in Koko Marina, also is making his Sony debut. He recorded one birdie, 10 bogeys and two double bogeys. He was 7-over in his last six holes.
