UH-Manoa water line repaired

A water line break caused by construction workers cut off supply to about one-fourth of the University of Hawai'i's Manoa campus for about five hours today, but daily operations on the campus continued for the most part.

The break occurred at about 9:50 a.m. at the Frear Hall project when Jayar Construction, the excavating contractor, struck an 8-inch, high-pressure water line located two to three feet below the surface, said Jim Manke, university spokesman.

An estimated 390,000 gallons of water was released and environmental measures were used to protect Manoa Stream, Dole Street and the catch basins on the bridge, Manke said. The sidewalk was closed.

The water main was repaired by 3:30 p.m.

Water to some nearby buildings was shut off or severely restricted, including student residence Hale Aloha towers, Noelani, Wainani, Gateway and Johnson Halls. Other building affected include Burns Hall, Hale Manoa, Holmes Hall, POST, Marine Sciences, University Health Services, Kuykendall Hall, Sakamaki Hall, Kennedy Theatre, Bilger Hall and Bilger Addition and the Art Building.

"We haven't heard even anecdotally of any big problem except the dining hall in the student residence complex canceled steak night," Manke said.
