Program helps owners find unclaimed property

Advertiser Staff

The Unclaimed Property Outreach Program of the state Department of Budget and Finance will participate in the New Year's Ohana Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii on Sunday to help people learn if they are the rightful owners of property that has been turned over to the state.

The state currently holds about $120 million in unclaimed property for safekeeping, much of it in the form of dormant savings and checking accounts, unclaimed inheritances, stock shares , uncashed payroll checks, uncashed dividend checks, deposits held by utilities and safe deposit box contents.

Representatives of the Unclaimed Property Program will be at the Ohana Fair from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help people search for unclaimed property. The Japanese Cultural Center is located at 2454 S. Beretania St.

Individuals may also search through unclaimed property listings via the Internet at www.unclaimed property.hawaii.gov or by calling the Unclaimed Property Program at 586-1589.
