Advertiser Staff
At about 3:30 this morning, the National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory for north- and west-facing shores of Ni'ihau, Kaua'i and O'ahu, for the north-facing shores of Moloka'i and Maui and for the west-facing shores of the Big Island.
A new west northwest swell has arrived and forecasters expect surf to hit the advisory level on Ni'ihau and Kaua'i around noon today, and to reach the advisory level on the Big Island by tonight.
Forecasters expect the new swell to bring some of the largest surf so far this year.
Surf along north- and west-facing shores of Ni'ihau and Kaua'i, and north-facing shores of O'ahu, Moloka'i and Maui will see surf climbing into the 14- to 16-foot range today with occasional sets to 19 feet by this afternoon.
The surf is expected to grow to 19 to 21 feet by Friday, with some sets peaking at 26 feet Friday night before the surf begins to diminish.
