Search under way at Pipeline for missing surfer

Advertiser Staff

Police, firefighter and Coast Guard rescue workers are looking for a surfer who failed to return to shore after entering the ocean at the Pipeline surfing area on Oahu's North Shore about 5 p.m. yesterday.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the surfer's girlfriend notified police about 11:10 p.m. Thursday night that her boyfriend hand not returned from the outing.

By about 1 a.m. this morning, firefighters were conducting a shoreline search of the area and the Fire Department's helicopter had been relocated from Honolulu International Airport to the Sunset Beach Fire Station. The Coast Guard was also preparing to launch one of its helicopters to aid in the search, if necessary, for the missing man.

No information was immediately available on the age of the missing surfer or where he is from. The National Weather Service yesterday issued a high surf advisory for the area, predicting wave faces of up to 29 feet by noon today for north-facing shores.
