The state collected $2.1 billion in taxes in the first half of the fiscal year that began July 1, a 4.4 percent increase over the first six months of the previous fiscal year, the state Department of Taxation reported yesterday.December saw $333.2 million added to the state general fund for a 7.8 percent hike over December 2005, the department said.
The general excise tax take last month of $164.6 million increased the cumulative collection figure to $1.2 billion. The 9.2 percent increase over the same time period in fiscal year 2006 was an indication that Hawai'i's economy remains strong, department officials said.
The withholding tax on wages rose 5.6 percent during the six-month period, reflecting a continuation of Hawai'i's strong employment market, they said.
