Polynesian Cultural Center to launch two new arts events this year

By Wayne Harada

The Polynesian Cultural Center, the hub of a Polynesian experience for visitors, will offer two new events highlighting South Seas arts.

A Polynesian Arts Festival is set for July 2 through 31, to celebrate the work of Island artisans who create traditional crafts, clothing and decor.

A Tongan Festival unfolds Sept. 21 to 22, showcasing the harmonious voices of singers and the syncopated dances of Tongan nationals.

The PCC will continue some of its signature events, too, such as the World Fireknife Dance Competition (May 16-18), now in its 15th season, and the popular Te Mahana Hiroa'a 'O Tahiti (July 6 and 7), which features Tahitian dances to the rhythms of the tamure drums.

For details, call PCC at 293-3333. Out-of-town prospective visitors may call (800) 367-7060.
