Pitcher Williams signs one-year deal with Nationals

Associated Press

Right-hander Jerome Williams and left-hander Brandon Claussen agreed to terms yesterday with the Washington Nationals, who are desperate for pitching depth.

Williams, who gets a one-year deal paying him $500,000 in the majors and $90,000 in the minors, went 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA in five appearances with the Chicago Cubs last season. Williams, a Waipahu High alum from Hawaii, was optioned in April to Triple-A Iowa, where he was 5-7 with a 4.76 ERA. The Oakland Athletics claimed Williams off waivers in September, then declined to tender him a contract offer last month.

He's 23-24 with a 4.03 ERA across four major league seasons with the Cubs and San Francisco Giants.

Claussen agreed to a minor league deal and will be in the Nationals' big league camp while he recovers from August shoulder surgery, including repair of a rotator cuff tear.

He's 16-27 with a 5.04 ERA in 58 starts in the majors with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees.
