'Jazzman' screening Sunday

Advertiser Staff

"Jazzman from the Gulag," a documentary about legendary trumpeter Eddie Rosner, will screen at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway, as a preview kickoff to February's fifth annual Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival.

The screening and a reception afterward, which includes a performance by Island musician Tennyson Stephens, are free.

The Polish-Jewish Rosner, nicknamed the "white Louis Armstrong" by Armstrong himself, fled Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union and eventually was sent by Joseph Stalin to Siberia.

The 1999 film, at 58 minutes, was directed by Pierre-Henry Salfati. It is in English and Russian, with English subtitles.

The film festival takes place Feb. 15-19 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Spalding Auditorium. Tickets are $6 at the door. A $25 five-film pass also is available. 595-7521, star 814.
