No. 4 Kalaheo holds off Kailua in OIA Red East

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — Kalaheo won its third straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East basketball game, holding off visiting Kailua, 54-40, last night.

But Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said his team — ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media — still is a work in progress.

"We had nine turnovers in the fourth quarter and went 9 for 15 from the line," Furtado said. "I'll take a 14-point win, but we still don't take care of business finishing games and we still need to play with more consistency. We have a good balance of size and athletic ability, but we need to be smarter. Once we find that consistency, we'll be in the mix."

Kalaheo improved to 3-1 in the OIA East, while Kailua fell to 2-2. The Surfriders put a scare into defending league champion Kaimuki last Saturday before losing, 53-52.

Last night, Kalaheo jumped to a 12-4 lead and Kailua never got closer than seven the rest of the way. The Mustangs went up, 34-22, after Deaux Burns' free throw with 2:57 left in the third period, but Gerald Ho swished a 3-pointer to cut it to 36-29 with 38 seconds left in the quarter.

Kalaheo's Koa Siliga then drained a 3-pointer with 3 ticks left to push the lead back to 10.

"That was a big, big shot," Surfriders coach Tim Harrison said. "We played really hard tonight, but the ball just didn't bounce our way."

Kailua could not capitalize on the Mustangs' turnovers in the fourth quarter and only got as close as 47-38 after Kenny Ellis' 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining.

Chase Moses scored 13 points and Cliffton Pires 11 for Kalaheo. Tyler Caswell added eight points and nine rebounds.

Tim Maghinay led the Surfriders with a game-high 15 points.
